Education continues to remain humanity’s greatest tool to gain knowledge about the world around us and how to survive in it. Education develops in people the proper perspective of life as it builds opinions and points of view on things in life. As a way of gaining information about the world and life in it, education is imperative. It is naturally constructive and reforms society. Education makes society assertive and raises the confidence level of society; thereby demanding what is due them.
Health education is much more critical and preserves society; it saves lives. According to WHO, health education is any combination of learning experiences designed to help individuals and communities improve their health by increasing their knowledge or influencing their attitudes. It is a strategy for implementing health promotion and disease prevention interventions. Health education presents information to target populations on particular health topics which includes benefits of good health as well as the consequences of poor health. It builds the capacity of communities and facilitates behavioural change which results into better health outcomes.
Over the years, ARHR has been educating communities for improved health outcomes through its carefully structured initiatives as a commitment to the realization of SDG 3 targets. ARHR continues to work to increase access to responsive adolescent reproductive health services and information in target communities; improve the capacity of target communities to understand and demand responsive, timely and accountable sexual and reproductive health services; and improve the capacity of Ghanaian NGOs and community-based organizations to deliver rights-based sexual and reproductive health services and information.
On this day as the world celebrates the enormous importance of education, we join our voices and affirm that education is a human right, public good and public responsibility. We affirm that education continues to be humanity’s greatest renewable resource which empowers people, preserves the planet, builds shared prosperity and fosters peace.
We will continue to educate and enable communities to learn, for people, planet, prosperity and peace. Happy International Day of Education!
